Gros Morne - July 19

JULY 21 ... PICS ADDED!!

No pics tonight... Will have to add them later, when we get decent data and the ability to charge all our devices fully.

Here's the scoop on today... Text version 

Woke the kids up early this morning so we could do a 3km hike into the docks for a fjiord.  Boy we're they "excited" about being awake for that lol.  It was a gorgeous day, hot and sunny and the bugs were in hiding so the kids came around and got happy again once we made it to the docks.

The actual location of the fjiord was called Westbrook Pond.  The Newfies seem to call everything a 'pond' even if it's really a lake.  Turns out that fjiords are supposed to be salt water too.  This one hasn't been salt water in hundreds of years (thousands even?  I don't recall exactly) since the land rose up between the sea and the mountains, cutting off the access between the two.  So, it turns out that we visited a fijord that's no longer a true fjiord that the locals call a pond when it's really a lake. Huh.  Whatever it's called, it was absolutely stunning. We took a boat ride through the water and learned all kinds of history about the formations and enjoyed ourselves.

When we left there we found a little grocery/convenience store to get buns and more snacks (since I packed meats and cheese but no buns and since Matthew gobbled all our snacks on the boat).  We had a little lunch on some giant rocks at low tide.  Everyone searched for cool critters again and found some neat stuff.  I saw a scary-looking black crab with white spots...looked like a tarantula.  He managed to hide really well before anyone could catch him and there was no way I was going after him.

We checked out the Bonne Bay Marine Centre which is small, cheap and super cool.  We had a personal tour of the facility and we all got to play in the touch-pond and learn about all the stuff we have been catching.

Turns out we have been catching Rock Gunnels (a long skinny fish), not eels.  Also, the lady there had heard rumour of some snow crabs with a sickness that turns them black but could not confirm.  There were so many questions we all had and we learned a bunch there.

It was pretty hot so we stopped at one last place to take a couple of scenic pics and then headed back to the trailer for dinner and to pack up for pulling out in the morning.  We have about an hour and a half drive down to our 10am guided hike of the Tabletops and still have to pump out the trailer on the way.

Oh yeah, it was also shower night tonight.  So good to be clean!
